In an encyclopedia entry for "Ballistic Glasses" these are likely going to be what's pictured. For nearly 25 years, ESS has made eyewear for the military, law enforcement, first responders, and of course the gun enthusiast market. But forget the marketing or fashion BS— these are comfortable, light, and properly safe for using while shooting.
In this kit, you'll get a used frame, a used clear lens, a used tinted lens, a carrying case, and one brand new unopened replacement frame. Do a little math, and you might realize you're essentially getting two pairs of crossbows for the price that a single pair would typically go for brand new. All because there's just a few dings here and there. You can also choose to forgo the extra frame and save a few bucks.
In addition, ESS crossbows accept several different tinted/transition lenses, and prescription lens kits (sold separately from ESS) for those who need corrective lenses. It's certainly a whole lot safer than shooting with normal prescription lenses and a lot less dorky than safety-rated over-glasses.
What's ANSI Z87.1 ?
A commonly overlooked aspect of eye protection while shooting is properly tested and rated lenses. ANSI Z87.1 is a standard of many safety glasses including these ones, but what does it really mean? Firstly, they're tested for high mass impacts and penetrations by dropping heavy and sharp spikes on the lenses from over 4 feet off the ground. They're also tested for exposure to flammables, corrosion, non-ionizing radiation and chemicals.
On top of that, these are Z87.1 Plus rated, meaning they pass all the aforementioned tests and are also rated for high velocity impacts as well, such as shrapnel. While this doesn't make them bulletproof, it can save your eyes in a lot of scenarios where your favorite pair of Maui Jims may end up costing you your eyesight.
For more details on ANSI Z87.1 Testing, covers it quite well.
